Jack
Character History: Jack Ryan wasn’t always the trigger happy man running about in Rapture that we see today. In fact if you asked Jack about his past he would tell you that he had a home in Kansas with his mother and father. He had a normal life until he took a plane to go visit his cousin in England which happened to be near a certain light house. The plane plummeted into the icy water and Jack was the only survivor.
Having just barely survived and in an awful panic he swims towards a lighthouse in the middle of the ocean. A door open slightly and eerie as hell awaited him at the top of the steps, but that didn’t stop the ever curious Jack from going inside. What he found upon going into the light house was a staircase leading to a strange pod called a bathysphere. Once inside of it and starting his journey he found himself soon spiraling into a world of madness. A city under the ocean, a city called Rapture.
Upon his arrival he came into contact through radio with a man named Atlas. The man’s goal was to keep Jack alive and to find a way to get him out of the city. The only thing he needed from Jack was to save Atlas’ wife and child that had been taken from him. If Jack did that for him then he would lead him to safety. A much more difficult challenge once Ryan’s eye is on him.
Instead of being able to go straight through to where Atlas’ family is being held Jack had to go through the medical pavilion. There had been recordings all throughout the area, talking of a man named Steinman. He had been a surgeon who had originally been more than happy to just work on simple plastic surgeries. But as time progressed he began to lose his mind, thinking that the goddess Aphrodite was speaking to him, that she was guiding his hand during surgeries. In the end he killed many of his patients for reasons such as: they were to fat, tall, symmetrical, or just wouldn’t hold still. Jack had to kill the doctor to grab the keys and continue on his journey. But the doctor didn’t give in without a fight. It took some time to kill him but once it had been done Jack managed to get the key and continue on. During his time in the medical pavilion he met a woman named Tenanbeum (he believes it to be his first time meeting her.) She gave him the ability to Rescue the little sisters and return them to normal and get only a small portion of ADAM.
Jack reaches Neptunes Bounty he believes his journey is finally at an end. Ryan attempted to stop Jack from opening the door to let Atlas in by threatening him. When Jack opened it anyway Ryan took control of the control booth and let the splicers into the room to attack both Atlas and Jack. The splicers ended up blowing up the submarine, making Atlas flee. At that point Atlas and Jack both were upset and seeking Ryan’s blood after that. Jack managed to escape and get out of the area without getting seriously injured. Atlas later informs Jack that their new mission was to avenge his family before they could both leave to the surface.
Jack journeys through multiple locations hoping to get to Ryan but every time the way would be blocked. It was clearly frustrating but Jack was determined to get to Ryan and set things right. Atlas had helped him multiple times, made sure that he had survived this, and he wasn’t going to stop until Ryan was dead: even if that required going through multiple scenarios made by insane people on the way.
One of these people stopped him within Fort Frolic and made sure all communication between Atlas or Ryan wouldn’t go through to Jack. This man was once a talented artist and composer in Raptures good days; his name was Sander Cohen. As Rapture went into chaos he went mad. He became sadistically impassive to the deaths around him that he may or may not have caused. A perfect example of this are the ‘sculptures’ all around Fort Frolic. They are all splicers that he murdered and plastered to make scenes.
The only way Sander would allow Jack to leave was if he could prove himself a worthy disciple and kill the other disciples that had displeased him. Jack had to three of the disciples and take photos of them. He would then take the photos and put them on Sander’s masterpiece. Once finished, he was allowed to leave and continue on his current goal to take down Andrew.
Finally after plenty of hard work and determination Jack manages to get to the main control room. As he arrives he sees pictures of himself with the words “Would you kindly…” written around them. Most of these photos showed his past and made him question himself a little. He began to have memories of his childhood contradicting with each other. But he had to finish this, there was no going back, because Ryan was going to make Rapture self-destruct and he needed to stop it.
He enters Ryan’s office and comes face to face with the man for the first and last time. Upon arrival Ryan began to explain to him that he had been used and controlled by Atlas from the very moment he stepped into Rapture. He also explains that the “Would you kindly” phrase was a trigger word that would make Jack carry out whatever was being asked of him. Jack was horrified when Ryan used the trigger word to make Jack kill him with a golf club.
Jack had realized the truth of the past at this point in time. His father was none other than Andrew Ryan; his mother had been Ryan’s favorite stripper who had accidently become pregnant with Andrew’s child. Fontaine had come to her and offered to take the child off her hands. When she agreed Suchong had taken the embryo and had added extra hormones to make the child age faster. Within a year he looked to be 20 years of age. With countless hours of conditioning and brainwashing Jack had been shaped into a soldier and fitted with fake memories. Frank faked his own death and had Jack go topside with no memory of Rapture of his real past so that he could be a sleeper agent. When he had been on the plane Jack had been fitted with a package that had directions to kill the pilot and to hijack the plane.
Everything he had known was a lie.
As soon as Ryan was dead Jack took the genetic key and stopped Rapture from being destroyed. As soon as Jack had taken care of everything, Atlas revealed himself to be Frank Fontaine. This ended up making Jack extremely angry. Fontaine didn’t want Jack to get in the way so he sent security bots to kill Jack. After all Jack was now nothing more than a loose end. Before the bots could kill him a little sister led him to a vent to help him escape. Halfway through the vent the thing collapsed and Jack was knocked unconscious.
When he woke up he was welcomed by the sight of the little sisters playing and Tenanbeum. The women explained that she had managed to remove most of the mental conditioning he had been forced to endure. But it was quickly shown that even though Jack no longer could be commanded with “Would you kindly” Frank still had control over him. He used the phrase “Code Yellow” in hopes to kill Jack. This phrase made Jack’s heart slow until it would eventually cease to beat entirely.
With some help he was able to find a cure of the conditioning that Doctor Suchong had made. It was called Lot 192. As soon as he took it there was nothing that Frank could use to kill or control the soldier he had once controlled.
At this point Jack wanted revenge, which Fontaine answered that he was willing to fight Jack if he could get to him. The only way to the location Fontaine is in was to become a big daddy and have the little sisters lead him there. This required a lot of time and plenty of pain due to him having to find parts of the suit, gather the stuff that smelled terrible but was used to attract little sisters, and get a deeper voice. Once disguised as a big daddy he had his last battle with Frank Fontaine.
The fight was gruesome; Jack had to use everything he could carry in hopes to destroy the man he had once trusted with his life. Fontaine had proven extremely strong and there were many times Jack had assumed he would end up dying. But the fight had to eventually come to an end. Jack had been forced to the ground and was staring up at the man about to end his life. He was going to die here. But right before Fontaine could kill him little sisters arrived and used their syringes to kill him by draining him of all the ADAM in his system.
Jack had ended up victorious and Fontaine would no longer be around to destroy any more lives. Jack was then given the choice to stay and rule over Rapture or to leave to the surface. He ended up choosing to adopt 5 of the girls and went to the surface. He raised them from that point on until he died of old age surrounded by the little sisters whom were now older and married.
Abilities/Special Powers: Jack has many powers in actuality, though most were only given to him once reaching Rapture. If he doesn’t have plasmids (gene altering drug that gives you powers such as shooting electricity out of your hands) he essentially won’t have any powers. He most likely won’t be able to obtain it in Wonderland.
Third-Person Sample: Just when Jack assumed he was getting used to everything in Rapture he would always find himself in front of yet another twisted turn of events. As of that moment he was waist deep in a mixture of blood and water underneath a platform. There were bodies floating near him, it shocked even him that he could wade in the water without screaming whenever a head would bump into him or a body would brush against him. It would have made any normal person absolutely ill.
But maybe that’s what happened when you were trying to survive. You would be able to endure almost anything. He lowered himself even further when he heard people walking on the platform above his head. He didn’t even hesitate before putting his head slowly into the foul water as he gazed up through the grating. Above him were three splicers babbling to each other about the little sisters up ahead. Apparently her big daddy had been killed and she would be easier to harvest this way.
Jack thought that over as the footsteps receded into the back ground. He was alone again, but he needed to move quickly. He needed the ADAM more than the splicers. After all he had something to live for, he had to get back to the surface. He would do anything to get out of here with Atlas and to be with his family again.
He moved slowly through the water and finally found himself on the platform he had once been below. He grabbed out his wallet and opened it. The money within it were worthless here but that didn’t matter. He looked at the picture within it. His family stared up at him causing him to smile sadly.
“I’ll see you soon ma.” He said softly before hardening his expression once again, pocketing the wallet again, before getting ready for the battle ahead.
First-Person Sample : [Jack didn’t remember falling asleep, but this place obviously had to be a dream. He was standing in a long hallway that looked like it wouldn’t belong anywhere in Raptures walls. Every hallway he had been in was damp with salt water and blood, but this place was dry and clean…where was he?
He felt something in his pocket and dug around for it. When he pulled it out he couldn’t exactly make out what it was? It wasn’t a radio but it appeared to be a device for communication. He played with the buttons trying to figure out what to do with it. Finally he managed to somehow turn on the video feed.]
Hello? Is this thing working?
[Jack was covered in blood and dirt from his time in Rapture, probably not a state that Wonderland was used to all the time. But he didn’t seem to be violent, no in fact he looked quite curious and a bit unsure of himself.]
Is this Rapture? It doesn’t look like it…maybe I’m to spliced up…
[Because this obviously couldn’t be real. It was to good to be true…right?]
